The abbreviation PD stands for pupillary distance. Along with the dial and other values, it is the key factor for a perfect fit of your glasses. The number indicating the pupillary distance is given in millimeters. / La abreviatura DP significa distancia pupilar. Junto con la esfera y otros valores, es el factor clave para un ajuste perfecto de tus gafas. El número que indica la distancia pupilar se da en milímetros.

The usual range of PD is 54–74 mm for adults and 43–53 mm for children. Some people have different values for the right and left eye. / El rango habitual de la DP es de 54–74 mm para los adultos y 43–53 mm para los niños. Algunas personas tienen valores distintos para el ojo derecho y el izquierdo.

How can I measure my PD? / ¿Cómo puedo medir mi DP?

Ideally, you should find the PD in the prescription of your glasses. Since the DP value does not change in adulthood, an old recipe is sufficient. / Lo ideal es que encuentres la DP en la prescripción de tus gafas. Como el valor de la DP no cambia en la edad adulta, es suficiente con una receta antigua.

However, it doesn't matter if you can find the DP value on your prescription or not. You can easily measure it by following the few steps outlined below. All you need is a ruler (10 cm is enough) and a mirror. / Sin embargo, no importa si puedes encontrar el valor de DP en tu prescripción o no. Puedes medirlo fácilmente siguiendo los pocos pasos que se describen a continuación. Todo lo que necesitas es una regla (10 cm es suficiente) y un espejo.

1. Stay about 20 cm from the mirror. / Mantente a unos 20 cm del espejo.

2. Hold the ruler horizontally above and against your eyebrows. / Sostén la regla horizontalmente encima y contra tus cejas.

3. Close your right eye and align the zero of the ruler with the inner vertex of your left pupil. / Cierra tu ojo derecho y alinea el cero de la regla con el vértice interior de tu pupila izquierda.

4. Open your right eye. Read the length (in mm) you see at the outer vertex of your right pupil. This is your DP! / Abre tu ojo derecho. Lee la longitud (en mm) que vez en el vértice exterior de tu pupila derecha. ¡Ésta es tu DP!

5. You can repeat the measurement several times (also from the right to the left eye). If they are different lengths, use the middle value. / Puedes repetir la medición varias veces (también desde el ojo derecho al izquierdo). Si son diferentes longitudes, utiliza el valor medio.
